We have to remember that this isn't a war the U.S. chose to be involved in, but after 9/11 we obviously had no choice. Our efforts in Iraq to this point have been successful, but the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan is a need for concern, especially if the liberal Obama administration agrees.
The U.S., who will commit 17,000 more troops, will change the way its forces are arrayed in Afghanistan as part of an overhaul of U.S. strategy in the flagging war. The Obama administration is expected to unveil a revamped plan for fighting insurgents in Afghanistan and Pakistan next week.
It is rumored that the plan will call for new garrisons(bodies of troops) in far-flung Afghan areas. That would help the U.S. hold ground against a resurgent Taliban-led insurgency. The forthcoming plan calls for a onus on Pakistan to confront the threat of insurgents who use its territory as a sanctuary from attack by U.S. and allied forces.
The emerging plan contemplates a large build-up of Afghan armed forces and security services, to as many as 400,000.That would be more than twice the number Afghanistan now has.
The plan also recommends a steep increase in civilian experts, and projects its goals over a 3-5 year period.
My fellow Americans, don't get used to this strong military and national defense policy, it won't continue.
